Home Makeover: Our Kitchen

Trent and I knew we wanted to paint the kitchen, we just couldn't decide on a color. The red made it seem really dark. Since we can't paint the cabinets (we are renters, remember?) then painting the walls will have to do!

Here are some BEFORE pictures...

After a trip to Lowe's we came home with a light blue-gray gallon of paint to brighten it up. If you remember from my last Home Makeover post, the paint in the living room turned out to look a little blue-ish. Because of this, the kitchen looked extremely bright and didn't match well.

We were almost halfway done before I expressed my hatred. Whoops! Sorry Trent!

I remembered a gallon of dark gray exterior primer paint we bought in the "Oops" section at Lowe's for $5. I planned to use it to paint some picture frames, but decided to slab some on the wall to see if it would work.

Well, it did! Here are the AFTER pictures using the Oops can!

I had no idea it would turn out so well! Bad news is I will never be able to use this color again...because the color itself was an accident made by the store!

The wood floors looked pretty rough in the kitchen. Before we moved in I put 4 coats of protectant to shine it up a bit. I wish I would have taken a before and after of that...HUGE difference! I think it looks pretty good now!

This color looks 100% gray in the can, but appears to look a little bit blue on our walls. Isn't it crazy how different colors can be after painting them on!?

I would like to add some decorations to this wall. I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet.

I would also like to add some decor to the tops of the cabinets, but still deciding on that too.

Trent hung these pictures for me. I originally planned to put them in the living room, but I think this is a better home for them :-)

These shelving units were already there when we moved in. Pretty handy!

Some flowers from our yard!

What do you think? Do you like our new color? I was actually really pleased with it! It blends well with the light gray color of the living room and brings in more cool tones. And for $5, who can beat that!?

One more before and after:

Thanks for reading!

  1. I love color and the ramen, bread, potatoes on the shelves. Extra nutrient dense!!

  2. Love it! Cheap paint, hoorrray!

  3. Definitely lightened up the kitchen A LOT. Makes it look a lot bigger and more clean cut (can't really find the word I am looking for so I hope that makes sense ha.) I have no clue if there is one out by where you guys moved too, but a good cheap place for paint and house fixer-upper supplies is habitat restore. Usually you can find what you are looking for, for much cheaper than what you would at a hardware store.
